Better Safe Than Sorry With Baby Cribs

Learn more about crib safety standards.

Despite some good intentions, not all of the baby cribs manufactured are safe. Your new crib is supposed to keep your infant safe at all times.  However, a poorly designed or badly constructed crib can be a major hazard to your kid?   Same if you assemble it incorrectly.  No matter how you paid for your crib you still need to use caution when picking out and setting up that new crib.

Among the most significant mistakes some new parents make is to assume that all baby cribs are safe.  Whether you are using a brand name brand-new baby crib that you just purchased a couple of months ago from a trustworthy store, or using the crib that worked well for your older kids, or using a used one bought at a garage sale, it is necessary that you carefully inspect the baby crib for hazards.  They might be well hidden, such as hinges that seem tight but are actually on good bump away from letting go.

Inspect Everything On The Crib

After you have purchased a crib and are ready to set it up, double check that all of the parts are there and that nothing is bent or missing.  Sharp edges, exposed joints or hinges and little parts in baby cribs can quickly become choking threats.  Sharp edges can lead to cuts and scrapes.

Side edges and protrusions can also end up being strangulation hazards as blankets, toys and sleepers can get caught and tangled.  Under no circumstances should you ever buy or use a crib with visible edges.

Follow The Instructions

Don’t assume for one-minute you know everything needed to know about baby cribs.  Just because you have set one up before doesn’t make you an expert.  Even if you feel very comfortable with tools and putting things together,  it is still necessary that you check out the owner’s manual and instruction guide.

Not only do most manuals give you a detailed listing of parts, the handbook will usually contain some ideas on how to effectively look after your crib and to prevent accidents while your child is using it.

All Lead Paints Were Banned

By law all cribs are required to be finished with non-toxic materials that are lead free.  An infant’s body systems, particularly the immune systems, are still establishing themselves.  This makes it very important that they be protected from chemicals and contaminants in their environments. If you end up buying a used baby crib, make certain that the finish is sound and not flaking or peeling. If it appears to have been refinished you might want to completely strip the finish, sand the wood down and repaint with a baby safe paint.

Drop Side Cribs Are No Longer Legal

The drop side system in child’s crib seemed to be very hassle-free.  However, studies showed that they could often spell catastrophe if not working properly.   After far too many tragic incidents all manufacturers were banned from making drop side cribs.  They can’t even by given away, by law they need to be destroyed.

Follow these basic crib safety rules.

Even though it’s human nature to put fun, cute things in a child’s crib, this can increase the possibilities of an accident. I’m sure you’re typically mindful that anything can be a possible choking and strangulation threat. To help prevent this, keep the baby crib to a bare minimum, only putting things that are definitely necessary like a pillow and a blanket.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission notes security pointers, alerts and call-back cautions on infant cribs on their website at www.cpsc.gov and should be followed.

Never Assume A Crib Is Safe

One of the biggest errors some individuals make is they “assume” that all baby cribs are safe, however whether you are using a brand new infant crib that you just purchased a couple of months ago from a credible store or recycling the one that you utilized for your older kids, or a 2nd hand one from a garage sale it is crucial that you carefully check the baby crib for hazardous possibilities as they may be prowling in locations that you would not even think about from another location dangerous! Remember that the more things inside the baby crib, the higher the possibilities of a mishap.
