Help! I’m A Parent And Clueless!

You Will Be Your Child’s Best Teacher

Tips For Parents With New Babies

Infants find out by checking out the important things around them. Show your child how to examine and look at things, how to listen and hear things, and how to touch different things.  Hold your baby in a way that allows them to see all of the things around them.  Help them to hold things that are always near them, like a toy or an article of clothing.  As they grow, give them some common objects and explain to them what they are, what the shape is or what the color is.  Don’t panic if they put it in their mouth, that is part of being a baby.

Be your baby’s teacher.  Your child will see how you respond to things and try to mimic your reaction. If  you are delighted or intrigued by a toy or a book, they will become delighted as well.  As your child gets older, show them how things work.  Take the time, and make it fun, to show how a cabinet door opens and closes.  Talk to your child during the whole process and ask them to close and open the door.

When your child is attempting something brand-new, it will help them to do it over and over again.  You can make this can be fun and even silly, and your young one will look forward to trying new things with you.

Keep Your Baby Safe And Comfortable

Always protect your child from any kind of disapproval or discomfort when they are learning new things.  A baby does not understand right from wrong until they are taught and because they are curious by nature there will be mistakes.  Young children also don’t comprehend danger very well and will often put themselves in situations that are unsafe.  This usually happens because they are curious and, as a parent, you need to keep them from dangerous situations.

A Happy Baby

Always talk and sing to your infant, especially when it is just the two of you. Not only does this entertain them and calm them, it helps teaches them how to speak and how to make themselves heard.  Language skills are learned, not inherited, and all children benefits from the people around them talking and singing to them.

Reading to your infant from the earliest months of their life is one of the best things any parent can do for a child.  As you child develops their language skills they will listen to what you are reading and create images and stories to go along with what they are hearing.  No one ever had a problem with being read to too often.  Even if they are in their crib, they will love being read to.

Your Baby And You

The first thing your baby will become interested in will be your face. It’s what they see when you hold them, it will be comforting to them and it will be a curiosity to them.  Let them touch your face and talk to them while they do this, it will calm them and give them a sense of safety.

Research has shown that babies can show discernible emotions as early as age one month.   These emotions are outside of the basic needs like food and comfort.  They can show happy and sad emotions that are genuine.  Healthy infants will show more emotions and will be calmer and more relaxed.  Sometimes something as simple as how you hold them will trigger an emotion that you can see.

Healthy Babies Show More Emotions

Healthier infants tend to be more curious and interested in the different things around them.  They will be happier and will show more interest in exploring and playing.  Because their focus tends to be better, they will attempt more things than a child who is less healthy and happy.   This also plays out in how creative a child will be with toys and books.

All babies will have occasional period of unhappiness and stress.  Usually this is part of a healthy baby growing up and they will learn from these periods.  While it is natural to calm and sooth them when they cry, sometimes it is just your child venting their frustrations in the only way they know.  Don’t panic and don’t over react.  Unless it is a very long duration of uncontrollable crying your child will be fine.

During the first few months, most of the unhappiness that occurs is a response to pain or discomfort. As your child gets older they will use crying to show unhappiness and anger.   Later they may use it to show signs of stress or uncertainty.  Like adults, children have these feelings and want to comfort themselves. Help your child handle these emotions with soothing talk, hugs and comfort.  They will learn how to sort these feelings as they get older and will be able to tell you what the problem is as their language skills develop.

Sometimes your child will show their distress in physical ways, such as curling into a ball or by their facial features.  The same rules apply as if they were crying.  Help soothe them and calm them down.

Babies Learning To Speak

Despite the impatience felt by all parents, your child will take many months before they speak.  All children discover their language skills at different speeds.  Most children start to recognize language after a few weeks or months.  They will be able to tell the difference in some speech patterns and will begin to recognize certain sounds.  One of the first speech differences notices by very young infants is the difference between male and female voices.  Their mother’s voice will become very familiar quickly and will act as a source of comfort right away.

Tips For Raising A Happy Baby

Even though they are unable to speak or form words, young children can make themselves understood quite early.  Even very young infants can use motions and different sounds to help the adults around them understand what the child wants or needs.  These signals may seem random or vague at first but both you and your child will begin to understand each other after a while.

The most common way of communication for new babies is to cry or to be fussy.  New parents spend a lot of time trying to decipher the cries of their new child and can get frustrated when nothing seems to calm the baby.  Usually this is your child trying to signal to you that something is wrong, but they are probably as confused as you are as to what that is exactly.  Be patient, both of you will eventually learn how to communicate with each other.

Talking and singing to your baby a lot will help speed up the language development of your child.  Despite what has been said on some ill-informed talk shows, children do not learn how to speak well or inform others well by listening to TV.

Yep, Babies Cry A Lot

Newborns communicate by crying, it has always been that way.  Your newborn will cry when they are hungry, they will cry when they are tired, they will cry when they are uncomfortable.  It will make you crazy at times, you want to calm them down and make them stop crying but you don’t know what the problem is.

How To Handle A Crying Baby.

Problem number one is almost always hunger, they are crying because you need to feed them. This will be the most common cry that you will hear and after a while you will start to recognize the hungry cry from other crying.  Soon enough you will also recognize a cry as meaning their diaper if full, they are tired or they are upset.

Ignore the old wives tale that you can spoil a child by responding every time that they cry.  Yes, children  can and do become spoiled, but it isn’t because their parents calmed them when they were very young.  Comfort and soothe your baby when they cry and learn what they need to be comfortable.  Your child will begin to respond not only to your voice but to your touch and your smell.  Hug, stroke and touch your child often, even if they aren’t in distress.  Both of you will benefit.

Calm, Soothe And Relieve Your Child

It has happened to every parent at one time or another.  No matter what you do, your baby keeps crying.  You feed them, you change the diaper, you get their favorite toy for them and they still cry. Sometimes it takes a combination of things to calm your child down.  Here is a list of some baby relaxation tips that may help your child relax:

– If you have a rocking chair, rock your baby while talking to them quietly.

– Gently pat, rub or stroke your baby’s head, chest and stomach.

– Calm your baby by holding them and making soft, gentle sounds.

– Quietly and calmly talk to your baby.

– Sing very softly to your child.

– Gently wrap your child in a favorite blanket and them hold them.

New Parents Need To Ask For Help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help!  All parents will feel like they are reaching the breaking point at some time and getting away, even if only for a few minutes, can make a huge difference.  This doesn’t make you a bad parent, it makes you human.  Ask a family member or a neighbor to sit with your child for a bit and give yourself a chance to unwind and clear your head.  This is another instance where both you and your child will benefit.

No baby comes with an instruction manual but there are plenty of other resources available to help new parents as they learn how to handle their new child.  Remember, they baby is learning about you the same time that you are learning about the baby.
